Start with the NWS nearshore forecast zone that covers the planned route, then read the active Marine Weather Message. A point forecast can add local detail, but it does not replace the zone forecast or warnings.
Compare the forecast period with the actual departure and return times. Wind direction matters around Sandusky Bay because shorelines and islands can shelter one leg while exposing another.
Recheck immediately before departure and while underway. Forecasts change; the operator must compare official information with observed sky, wind and water conditions.
