The Coast Guard recommends leaving a float plan because accurate trip and vessel details are difficult to reconstruct during an emergency. Give it to a reliable person who will notice an overdue return.
Include vessel description and registration, people aboard, departure point, route, stops, destination, communications equipment and the time to notify authorities.
Update the contact when plans change and close the plan after returning. A social-media post is not a substitute for a responsible person with clear instructions.
